Pekapeka pounamu. The Pekapeka design is commonly accepted to symbolise spiritual protection and guardianship with its two heads representing balance. A greenstone pendant, slightly rounded though shallow in depth. This beautiful Pekapeka has been carved from pounamu (greenstone) by Sands Carving Studio founded by carver Alex Sands- Ngāti Kahungunu o Te Wairoa, English, Scottish and Irish. When it comes to buying pounamu, some of our customer's most frequently asked questions surround Māori traditions and customs, such as blessing and gifting pounamu, identifying traditional designs, and what to do if their pounamu is broken. This Manaia is made from New Zealand pounamu and is carved by Judah Ashton. Believed to be a messenger that moves freely between the spirit realm and the human world, the Manaia is a mythological creature, greatly respected in Māori culture and a predominant motif in wood and greenstone carving.
